Given a non-zero vector (pq), it is known that the vector (q−p) is perpendicular to (pq) and has the same magnitude. (Do NOT prove this.)
Points A and B have position vectors OA=(a1a2) and OB=(b1b2), respectively.
Using the given information, or otherwise, show that the area of triangle OAB is 21∣a1b2−a2b1∣.

Sample answer:
Let θ be the angle between OA and OB.
Area of triangle =21absinθ, where a=∣OA∣ and b=∣OB∣.
OC=(a2−a1)
We are told that OC is perpendicular to OA and with the same magnitude.
OB⋅OC=(b1b2)⋅(a2−a1)=a2b1−a1b2(1)
We can also express OB⋅OC in terms of θ:
OB⋅OC=∣OB∣∣OC∣cos(∠BOC)=b×a×cos(∠BOC)
Case 1: ∠BOC=2π−θ, so OB⋅OC=absinθ.
Case 2: ∠BOC=2π+θ, so OB⋅OC=−absinθ.
In both cases,
OB⋅OC=∣absinθ∣=2×(Area of triangle)
Therefore,
area of triangle=21OB⋅OC=21∣a2b1−a1b2∣=21∣a1b2−a2b1∣
